Various - The History of Space Age Pop Vols. 1-3

For those of you looking for something like synth-pop, hate to bum you out, but we're going way back, to the precursor to modern ambient and the like.

Stolen from Waffles, all credit goes to the original author:
"Far above the islands of savages and exotic geishas, lies a new frontier. As Exotica displayed an infatuation with the "other," the late 50s had an infatuation with the future. This relationship is best exemplified through music by the style known as "Space Age Pop." Unlike the sociological dystopia seen in contemporary culture, the early 50's had an extremely optimistic, if not unrealistic expectation for the future. The "Space Race" had America envisioning their houses on the moon and how much time a robot maid would actually save. Space Age Pop encapsulated this optimism and imagined the future sounds of music. Early Science Fiction films share a common trait: their ability to imagine a futuristic world was limited by the technology available at the time. Similarly, the future of music, Space Age Pop, was a hyper-spun version of Lounge. Extremely upbeat and modern, Space Age Pop is the sounds of flying cars and metallic uniforms. While the combination of strings, vibraphones and bongos was crowned the future sounds of "hip," somewhere and somehow, this genre failed to make it past the 60's."

I'll probably post more of this stuff, it's really great.
