5,000 Visits

Just a quick thank you for all 5,000+ visits we've gotten here. It took longer than I'd hoped to get there, but we got there! So thanks for the first 5,000 and here's to the next 5,000. Keep coming back!

Tim Barry - Rivanna Junction

Tim Barry may be the lead singer of the hardcore band Avail, but that doesn't mean he can only write good hardcore songs. His first solo full length is an excellent album, full of the same honest songwriting that you'd find in any of the best Avail songs. Comprising mainly of acoustic, southern-tinged folk songs, this album is stripped down folk punk. I say folk punk not because he sounds like This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb or early Against Me (he could certainly lead a band like that though) but because this is unfiltered aggression through an acoustic setting.

Sonny Clark - Dial "S" For Sonny

Why are there many greats that die so young? Sonny Clark was a brilliant jazz pianist who undoubtedly would have gone on to a long and successful career. He is often regarded as the quintessential hard bop pianist, who died in 1963 at the age of 31. It is often stated that he never played a bad recording throughout his career, and each album is a jazz classic. Heard a track off of it on the way home today two days ago(!) and just had to get it.

Again, had this ready before and some stuff came up (like the fact that it didn't download until last night (???)).

A bunch of Swedish Death Metal

I'm on real metal kick lately. Maybe that's why the Facebook quiz told me that for my RPG class I was a Dark Knight (no, not Batman). Anyways, after seeing a really intense book about Swedish death metal I asked the good people of waffles (specifically the "Waffles metal heads" thread) to recommend me some swedish death. And this is the result. I couldn't find everything they recommended (I'm still looking for a few albums, and I haven't gotten around to most of their doom recs either). But the Swedes seem to have a knack for making particularly brutal and evil death metal, which is surprising because Swedish sounds like little kids making funny sounds (as opposed to Finnish which according to the lead singer of Lordi "Sounds fucking trollish"). Maybe that's why most of them sing in English. This is some seriously good stuff.

Pirates Of the Caribbean OSTs

You might think it's strange that first thing I post today is some intense sludge, and then I follow it up with the soundtrack to a Disney pirate movie. Fact is, that is pretty strange. Just goes to show you the diversity of all the stuff I've got. Besides, I can relate pirates and metal (Alestorm!), and I actually enjoyed the three Pirates of the Caribbean movies. These three discs were originally part of a box set that I grabbed off of LzTr but the fourth disc was just remixes and a couple tracks that weren't in the movie, not something I desperately needed. If you ever want to feel like a real pirate take a listen to these.

Captain Bringdown and the Buzzkillers - 3 albums

Three seems to be the magic number when I post multiple albums by one artist. Sorry for the long delay, I haven't had all that much time to update this week.

Captain Bringdown and the Buzzkillers is a ska-punk band from Texas (now a trio, known as The Buzzkillers) who believes in the true spirit of DIY. They have a great sound and write great songs. Very similar stylings to Big D and the Kids Table's How It Goes and Good Luck albums. A great listen for any ska-punk fan.
Couldn't find the art.

MC Lars - The Graduate

I must admit that the only reason I know MC Lars exists is because I noticed he was on tour with the Aquabats last year (I was so disappointed that they came nowhere near me). The best way to describe his style of hip hop is if the Aquabats put out some really nerdy hip hop. That's all I can think of when I listen to him. Honestly, that's exactly what this is. He lacks any real talent, but that can be ignored when you can't stop laughing listening to "The Roommate From Hell" or "Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock" (which sounds like a cheesy version of a Big D and the Kids Table song (it's not)).

(I've had this update almost ready for almost 2 days, my stupid WiFi is messed up again)

LTJ Bukem - Journey Inwards

It took LTJ Bukem ten years to release an album of his own, one all to himself. He churned out compilations and singles through Good Looking/Looking Good, each one just as fantastic as the next. Even the epic Logical Progression Level 1 was only mixed by Bukem, containing a few songs by him and even more by his labelmates. This is an album in true Bukem style, jazzy and more an instrumentalist album with midtempo breaks instead of something along the lines of an Aphex Twin release. This album is very similar to the Amon Tobin album Bricolage. If you've ever heard that album and liked it, this album is just as good, probably better.
