The mighty Black Sabbath! No explanation needed for this one, just realized I didn't have these albums and grabbed them off waffles. Seriously, if you don't know who Black Sabbath is, where have you been for the past 30+ years?

The name of this album would imply that you would actually be able to dance to it. Really, the only thing this album is good for is to headbang until you get whiplash so bad you can't move your neck for a week. I suppose that track titles like "Unholy Wrath" and "A Thorn In Holy Flesh" and the band being called "Mordicus" might tell you that. I really enjoy this album, it's as if Metallica had brutal growl vocals, and played more thrash with their "Black Album"-type arrangements.

Darc Mind - Symptomatic of a Greater Ill

One of waffles' hidden gems.
Review (stolen from waffles S9S):
Let's say you're looking for some serious expansion of your hip-hop collection. You've covered all the classics; heard all the J5, Public Enemy, and such, but need a rest from Kanye West. You need to get yourself some Anticon - an unconventional record label that works more as a "collective" of artists who work very close together on all sorts of musical and non-musical projects. If you want to look for another sound in hip-hop, then give this a spin.
Anticon is set up with the distinctive purpose of counteracting the more mainstream variant of hip-hop. Think of it as a sort of Ninja Tune, only the artists are a more tight-knit lot. The label nurtures the works of artists like Odd Nosdam, Alias and Why?. If you shop around a bit for Anticon artists, you'll find that it isn't easy to brute force them into the hip-hop category - and that's a good thing if you ask me. One album that falls well into the hip-hop genre is Symptomatic of a Greater Ill by Darc Mind.
The people at Anticon decided to finally release this gem in 2006 - I say finally because Darc Mind made the album back in the mid 90's. However, their current label folded and the release was canceled. Unfortunately, Darc Mind weren't able to find a label to release the album in subsequent years. There seemed to be no room or interest for an innovative album of the same caliber as something like Jeru the Damaja's 1994 release The Sun Rises in the East. But now, after almost a decade, the album of Darc Mind was released in 2006 for the enjoyment of all. In my opinion, just to get you started, the first song on the album you should listen to is "Visions of a Blur". After that, it becomes much easier to get as hooked on the album as I have become!

New feature!!! Browse by quality.

So you can now browse the files by quality! They are marked with an underscore (_) before the quality (ie. V0, 128, 192, etc). They are all mp3, if I ever upload something in FLAC (unlikely) then it would be marked as _flac. If I couldn't remember what the quality was then I did not mark it.
Cool.

Various - The Big Gundown: Reggae Inspired by Spaghetti Westerns

Review (stolen from KG user kuruyacya):
The Big Gundown is a wicked compilation of late 60s and early 70s reggae songs that have been inspired by classic spaghetti western movies! This is fantastic stuff that's had us wearing our stetsons and skanking 'round the office all day!
Of all the cinematic genres, it was the Hollywood Westerns that captured the imaginations of the young Jamaicans the most, and the island's record producers were quick to cash in with ska classic s such as "Gun Fever", "Tall in the Saddle", "Vera Cruz", and "Lawless Street". However, in the mid-sixties, Italian movie directors such a Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci and Sergio Sollima deconstructed their favourite movie genre and invested it with a new realism, and so the Italian Westerns took on their own identity. The grit, the dirt, the sweat, the scenery and above all the relentless, merciless violence made a huge impression on cinema audiences and especially in Jamacia, where, as legend has it they were eventually banned as a response to local rude boys joining the gunplay and shooting a the screens!
Funnily enough, none of these reggae tributes to spaghetti westerns actually cover the music from the movies they took their titles from, rather the producers and musicians attempted to recreate the brooding, violent atmosphere of the movies and add a new dimension to what may have turned out to be a commercially average track.

Experimental music is hard to describe. For one thing, it's very subjective. Just because two people think that experimental music is cool doesn't mean that they'll enjoy the same pieces. I say this because that is the case with this album. You're either going to love it or hate it.
Listening to this album makes you think you should be surrounded by aliens who are about to probe your insides, because that seems like the only thing that could make the sounds you're hearing.

This is similar to Impact Unit and SOA. Not in the sense of musical style, but in the fact that the singer of this small band would go on and do great things. Tomas Kalnoky (age 15) wrote and sang for the East Brunswick, New Jersey based punk band. His excellence and fame in the ska scene is foreshadowed on this rare punk tape that includes the track "Supernothing" which Kalnoky would later re-record with both Catch 22 and Streetlight Manifesto. Definitely cool to hear Tomas at such a young age with this band. This is the only album they ever released.

OinkPlus comes through again. I seriously love it. Actually, the original inspiration for this post came from AllMusic's album of the day. I looked up Joe Jackson's Beat Crazy on waffles and checked out the facts. Similar artists: Elvis Costello and the Attractions, XTC, The Tubes, Prefab Sprout, The Cars, The The. I like all of those groups. It was the fact that Elvis Costello was at the top of the list, and mentioned in the bio that really convinced me to get these three albums.
Seriously, the similarity of the two cannot be understated. If you love Costello, you'll love Jackson.
Tag explanation: He really is power pop, but often referred to as "punk", and Beat Crazy is very reggae influenced.

Mike Birbiglia is a funny guy. I downloaded his stuff because the OinkPlus Greasemonkey script said he was like Patton Oswalt. After listening to some of his stuff, I can see why. They have an EXTREMELY similar delivery, but the jokes Mike Birbiglia tells are a whole lot less nerdy, more along the lines of Daniel Tosh. No matter who he reminds me of, these three albums are definitely worth a listen. If you only get one of them, be sure that it's Two Drink Mike, that seems to be his best. If there was one you didn't need, it's probably My Secret Public Journal, there's some pretty weak stuff on there.

The Electric Prunes' I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) is a garage rock classic. For those of you who don't know, garage rock is (mostly) American rock during the 60s and early 70s that was heavily influenced by the mod rock in England. Groups of this genre and proto-punk bands are often lumped into the same category.
This album showcases the group's talent, as they were only allowed to record two of their own tunes, because David Hassinger, who does a great job producing here, didn't know what kind of material to have the band play!

Ugh, 4 days without an update. There was just nothing that I wanted to check out (oddly enough) and I didn't feel like looking for something I already had to share. Well, thankfully I found Danger Mouse's mashup of Jay-Z Black Album and the Beatles White Album (hence the title). I'd heard tracks off of this a million times before, but never bothered to download it. It just popped into my head while I was staring at different categories on waffles. Anyways, this is a really cool album, Danger Mouse has got a great talent for picking songs and samples that go well together.

For those of you looking for something like synth-pop, hate to bum you out, but we're going way back, to the precursor to modern ambient and the like.
Stolen from Waffles, all credit goes to the original author:
"Far above the islands of savages and exotic geishas, lies a new frontier. As Exotica displayed an infatuation with the "other," the late 50s had an infatuation with the future. This relationship is best exemplified through music by the style known as "Space Age Pop." Unlike the sociological dystopia seen in contemporary culture, the early 50's had an extremely optimistic, if not unrealistic expectation for the future. The "Space Race" had America envisioning their houses on the moon and how much time a robot maid would actually save. Space Age Pop encapsulated this optimism and imagined the future sounds of music. Early Science Fiction films share a common trait: their ability to imagine a futuristic world was limited by the technology available at the time. Similarly, the future of music, Space Age Pop, was a hyper-spun version of Lounge. Extremely upbeat and modern, Space Age Pop is the sounds of flying cars and metallic uniforms. While the combination of strings, vibraphones and bongos was crowned the future sounds of "hip," somewhere and somehow, this genre failed to make it past the 60's."
I'll probably post more of this stuff, it's really great.

At the end of Ravi Shankar's "An Introduction to Indian Music"(from the album Sounds of India) he says that, "The Western listener will appreciate [Indian] music more if they listen with an open and relaxed mind". This is very true. You cannot go into Indian music, classical or contemporary, expecting what you would from western music (Well, you could in contemporary Indian music). Anyways, a great example of classical Indian music, with only 3 very long, exceptional tracks.

Charlie Christian - The Genius of the Electric Guitar

After Charlie Christian, every jazz guitarist for the next 30 years sounded like a relative or a copycat of him. Originally a pianist, he picked up the guitar when he became a student of Eddie Durham, the inventor of the amplified guitar. He could play the guitar like it was a saxophone, smooth and swinging. Charlie Christian played with legends like Benny Goodman, Thelonius Monk, and Dizzy Gillespie. However his time as an up-and-coming star was short lived. He died of tuberculosis in 1942 at the age of 25. This compilation showcases his brilliance, and is a must-have for any jazz fan, and even more of a must-have for anyone who is a fan of jazz guitar specifically.

A Clockwork Orange OST

A Clockwork Orange, the film that brought Anthony Burgess's frightening and almost impossible to understand novel of the same name to life. A bleak portrait of the future, where teenagers roam in gangs, attacking old, homeless drunks, break into homes and rape the women. It tells the story of Alex, leader of a gang of "droogs", who is a juvenile delinquent, and is sent to prison after the murder of a woman (with a giant sculpture of a penis no less). He undergoes experimental treatment, that makes him gag at the sight of violence, sex, or anything else considered vile and bad by those in charge. This leads those who performed the procedures to tell him he is "cured" In the end, after breaking almost every bone in his body, his mind reverts to its previous state and he leaves us with the line, "I was cured all right." But without its soundtrack, this film would not deliver this harrowing story nearly as well. Featuring tracks from the likes of Alex's dear Ludwig Van (Beethoven), Rossini, Elgar, and Gene Kelly, this is quite an eclectic mix, especially when you hear Henry Purcell's ominous "Title Music From A Clockwork Orange".
