Henry Rollins - Talk Is Cheap Vols 1-4

So, as I mentioned previously in my recent Henry Rollins post, I really love his spoken word/stand-up albums. So grabbing these four volumes, released between 2003-04. It's truly a great set, with longer tracks, which I love. Of course a more unbiased review would be helpful, and I suppose a longer and more detailed one too, but I had to get this one up and out there because it's so good.

Omega Massif - Geisterstadt

German sludge/post-metal band Omega Massif's debut album. In German, "Geisterstadt" means ghost town. This album could be the soundtrack to a ghost town for sure, so it is aptly titled. Entirely instrumental, this is an album that really shows the musical side of sludge and doom. This album is also considered post-metal because it is on the minimalistic side and has many atmospheric touches.

National Treasure OST

Composed by ex-Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin, the music fits the Disney hit movie National Treasure. With suspenseful passages and more up-beat compositions, this is a typical soundtrack to a pretty good movie. Nothing here is really special or standout, it's just that I liked hearing the music in the movie, and it's pretty good on it's own too.

Henry Rollins - Eric the Pilot

Henry Rollins, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...
Now with the major ass-kissing out of the way, here is another solid Rollins spoken word/stand-up album. An engaging and hilarious account of a strange pilot and the Midwest, Rollins is in his usual form. Brutally honest, and bringing a dose of reality into an otherwise hazy existence, every Rollins set leaves you wanting more, wishing he would never step off the stage. Fantastic.
I also highly recommend reading his journal entry based books if you like his stand-up stuff, very similar. If you like his audiobooks too, you should get his other stories.

The Devil's Blood - Come, Reap

I initially assumed this was a doom album. This album is nowhere near doom, much more along the lines of a throwback band (ie. Priestess, Wolfmother) Although they did have a prominent Sabbath influence (like most doom bands), this album feels more like it belongs with Sabbath in the late 70s than present day. The extensive occult and satanic imagery fits in perfectly with modern metal bands who have a tendency to overdo things, but somehow, it works here. . Only 5 songs, this is a throwback tribute that does those late-70s metal bands justice.

Walter/Wendy Carlos - Switched-On Bach

Many people today know the name Walter/Wendy Carlos through many movie scores including "The Shining," "Split Second" and "Tron."
The name Walter, or Wendy Carlos, is associated with a dense patchwork made of classical music and synthesizers. It is perhaps the movie "A Clockwork Orange" and the processed vocal climax of the Ninth Symphony that Carlos style and legacy is most known. Switched On Bach also represents one of the first landmarks in the complicated and rudimentary birth of electronic music. Carlos was not the first electronic musician in the 60s, however, it could be argued that he was among the most popular. Switched On Bach went on to win three Grammy awards in the next year and become the highest selling classical album to date. The late 60's was a time of great social change when many old institutions were being questioned and destroyed. Carlos' electronic reinterpretation of Johan Sebastian Bach is unlikely to remembered as socially revolutionary as other musical acts or events at the time. However, the popularity of Moog-based classical music, for better or worse, represented a shift in consciousness on the nature of traditions. Sure, there were older reinterpretations on classical pieces including Spike Jones' zany pillaging of the classics. However, Carlos' works are based off of sound rather than comedy. Switched on Bach remains one of the most popular Moog-based classical albums. For Carlos, the sound of Switched on Bach spawned many sequels and variations and remains artistically tied to the composer. It is the polarity between the electronic sound and baroque composition that makes the album timeless, or rather caught in a vacuum, vortex or hyper-dimension.
