Laserdance - Future Generation

"This is it. No need to look any further. I never knew what I was missing until I had it. Much like a door opening in wall I never knew existed, my experience with Laserdance could be compared with an unseen weight which was lifted the day "Power Run" was first played. This is the sound of a thousand green laser beams crossing over darkened perspective plane with a vanishing point which flashes to a 4/4 beat. This is optimism in its purest form. The sound running through the heads of CEOs when closing million dollar investment deals on treadmills. This dull shine of a new Walkman combined with the weight of a DynaTAC 8000X. While American disco was taken out of commission during the early 80's, its European counterpart continued to enter into an extended after-party complete with space suits and painted backgrounds of far away lands. Space Disco, which was born in the late 70's, reached its cosmic zenith in the early 80's. Its sound typifies the feeling and spirit of the early 80's; a sense of flying optimistic eclipsing the speed of light. Laserdance's classic debut soars on the wings of electronic hand claps and synth lines which only exist inside the glass walls of the 80's. The work of Lindstrom, Datashat and soundtracks to corporate training videos owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Space Disco titans. So whether it is breakfast on a powerboat or a couple of cocktails with the boss's daughter, Laserdance is the perfect soundtrack for any success-driven occasion."
Note: "Space Disco" is also referred to as "Synthdance" and "Spacedance" and is a subgenre of italo-disco.

Venetian Snares - Winter In the Belly of a Snake

Everything Aaron Funk does as Venetian Snares is intense. That's the only word to describe the sound, intense. Drill 'n' bass at it's finest (think Aphex Twin, certain Squarepusher albums, Amon Tobin), every Venetian Snares album is composed of blisteringly fast breakbeats that have been sliced and diced into mind melting sounds, mixed with samples and harsh melodies (if you can call them melodies). Winter In the Belly Of a Snake is another solid album from the Winnipeg artist.

Walter/Wendy Carlos - Switched-On Bach

Many people today know the name Walter/Wendy Carlos through many movie scores including "The Shining," "Split Second" and "Tron."
The name Walter, or Wendy Carlos, is associated with a dense patchwork made of classical music and synthesizers. It is perhaps the movie "A Clockwork Orange" and the processed vocal climax of the Ninth Symphony that Carlos style and legacy is most known. Switched On Bach also represents one of the first landmarks in the complicated and rudimentary birth of electronic music. Carlos was not the first electronic musician in the 60s, however, it could be argued that he was among the most popular. Switched On Bach went on to win three Grammy awards in the next year and become the highest selling classical album to date. The late 60's was a time of great social change when many old institutions were being questioned and destroyed. Carlos' electronic reinterpretation of Johan Sebastian Bach is unlikely to remembered as socially revolutionary as other musical acts or events at the time. However, the popularity of Moog-based classical music, for better or worse, represented a shift in consciousness on the nature of traditions. Sure, there were older reinterpretations on classical pieces including Spike Jones' zany pillaging of the classics. However, Carlos' works are based off of sound rather than comedy. Switched on Bach remains one of the most popular Moog-based classical albums. For Carlos, the sound of Switched on Bach spawned many sequels and variations and remains artistically tied to the composer. It is the polarity between the electronic sound and baroque composition that makes the album timeless, or rather caught in a vacuum, vortex or hyper-dimension.

LTJ Bukem - Journey Inwards

It took LTJ Bukem ten years to release an album of his own, one all to himself. He churned out compilations and singles through Good Looking/Looking Good, each one just as fantastic as the next. Even the epic Logical Progression Level 1 was only mixed by Bukem, containing a few songs by him and even more by his labelmates. This is an album in true Bukem style, jazzy and more an instrumentalist album with midtempo breaks instead of something along the lines of an Aphex Twin release. This album is very similar to the Amon Tobin album Bricolage. If you've ever heard that album and liked it, this album is just as good, probably better.

Various - Experimental Music of Japan (1957-67)

Experimental music is hard to describe. For one thing, it's very subjective. Just because two people think that experimental music is cool doesn't mean that they'll enjoy the same pieces. I say this because that is the case with this album. You're either going to love it or hate it.
Listening to this album makes you think you should be surrounded by aliens who are about to probe your insides, because that seems like the only thing that could make the sounds you're hearing.

A Clockwork Orange OST

A Clockwork Orange, the film that brought Anthony Burgess's frightening and almost impossible to understand novel of the same name to life. A bleak portrait of the future, where teenagers roam in gangs, attacking old, homeless drunks, break into homes and rape the women. It tells the story of Alex, leader of a gang of "droogs", who is a juvenile delinquent, and is sent to prison after the murder of a woman (with a giant sculpture of a penis no less). He undergoes experimental treatment, that makes him gag at the sight of violence, sex, or anything else considered vile and bad by those in charge. This leads those who performed the procedures to tell him he is "cured" In the end, after breaking almost every bone in his body, his mind reverts to its previous state and he leaves us with the line, "I was cured all right." But without its soundtrack, this film would not deliver this harrowing story nearly as well. Featuring tracks from the likes of Alex's dear Ludwig Van (Beethoven), Rossini, Elgar, and Gene Kelly, this is quite an eclectic mix, especially when you hear Henry Purcell's ominous "Title Music From A Clockwork Orange".

Photek - Form And Function

A compilation of sorts, this album contains all six singles from Photek Records, tracks that made a name for Rupert Parkes in the jungle community, but only four of them are originals, the rest being remixes and two new productions. Despite the lack of originals on this album, there is no lack of originality. This album has excellent production, but it isn't overwhelming sonically, at times one would even say it's extremely sparse. This is right up there with Goldie's Timeless as one of my favorite drum 'n' bass/jungle albums.
